Damp towels need never bother you again. As the push for five-star bathrooms gains ground, heated towel rails have gone from a rare luxury to an attainable one.

Attention to detail with things like heated towel rails in the bathroom is becoming more common. Heated bathroom towel rails have also come down in price since originally been used exclusively in hotels. These days they're not only functional but look great, with some sleek designs straddling floor to ceiling.

Heated towel rails generally operate by heating either water or air within the heated towel rails via an internal element. They can be wired directly into mains power so the cabling is concealed, or plugged in like any other appliance. In water-filled rails, the element is small, replaceable and located at the bottom of the rail. "The hot water rises to the top and the colder water drops to the bottom and that's what distributes the heat evenly throughout the heated towel rail. The same water exists inside the heated towel rail for the life of the product. There's nowhere for the water to go; it's all sealed up and tested so no water can seep out or evaporate.

So-called 'dry elements' are coiled throughout the heated towel rail to heat the air and aren't replaceable, but generally they should last decades.

Some bathroom heated towel rails have the option of a timer or even a thermostat so towels are warm when you need them. And they're cheap to run most are equivalent to running a 100W bulb. Even a really big heated towel rail will only be the equivalent of about two light bulbs. Some larger heatedtowel rails can also be used to heat the room, but you need to consider the size of the space you're heating.

Heated towel rails are available in various finishes, such as chrome and polished or brushed stainless steel. And installing one in an existing bathroom is simple. If you're going to hang heavy wet towels on it, you need something fairly stable, so ideally fix it onto a stud or brick wall.
